Tipping in massage therapy

Let's break the taboos, if they really are ones. Let’s talk about tipping in massage therapy!

And it's going to be really simple. There are generally two career opportunities for massage therapists:

  • Mass workers who work in a spa or hotel

  • Self-employed masseurs (who travel, or rent space in a clinic)

Massage therapists in spas and hotels are paid between $25 CAD and $35 per massage. You're probably saying to yourself that it's not much compared to the price you pay, i.e. $110 to $150 for 60 minutes?

I would say yes and no, it depends on the decorum and location of the place. The massage therapist does not have to look for clients and simply has to show up at work where everything, in general, is provided (premises, appointments, sheets, etc.)

On the other hand, this massage therapist may only come for 3 massages. So, imagine that in the best case scenario, it takes him 30 minutes to get to work and get set up. Another 30 minutes to return. Let's say at $32 for a 60-minute massage, he/she will have made $96 in half a day.

Oh, there may also be a gap between two massages, and this hour is not paid!

In my opinion, tipping is essential in this case. Short of a catastrophic massage, not giving one would be insulting. In a spa, we tip.

In fact, in a spa or a hotel , you pay more because you have the possibility of having an appointment the same day .

As for massage therapists who work for themselves, you will notice that most do not offer the tipping option. This is partly because more comes into their pocket. Note that like all businesses, they have rent, insurance, expenses to pay, in addition to managing their own schedule, washing sheets, etc. You will also notice that you will need to make your appointment in advance.

Some self-employed massage therapists will still offer the possibility of leaving a tip, it may be that these massage therapists offer an experience closer to the spa, with a little more atmosphere, essences, decorum.

Personally I do not suggest it, even though I refuse it.

Why? Because I see myself as a therapist, in the same way as a physiotherapist, an osteopath, an acupuncturist… Would you tip your physio? No.

I also charge based on the value I think I offer. And when I think I'm worth more, I'll charge more.

So although I refuse your tip, seeing you come back for another meeting, or referring me to other people, it's nice! 🙂

Enjoy your massage!
